Young Artists Competition Drop-Off Deadline is February 13th

Hello, teachers, educators, and community leaders!
We’re opening the doors at the Meditating Monkey Art Emporium to the next generation of local artists, and your classrooms, programs, and communities are exactly who we built this for.
 
Who We Are
Meditating Monkey is a new, local art-supplies retailer and rotating gallery at 136 N. 1st St., Raton. We run weekly events: free community gatherings and affordably priced events across a wide range of creative interests. We also host a vendor marketplace and an upstairs auditorium for performances and community programming.
What we’re announcing: our Young Artist Competition, a month-long program we plan to repeat as we grow. We’d love your help spreading the word and, if you’re interested, scheduling a brief (5–10 minute) in-class or after-school visit to talk to students or other youth groups about submitting (We are also always open to 1:1 meetings about any event ideas or general art discussion!)
 
About The Competition

  • Who: Open to artists ages 17 and under.

  • Artwork requirements: 8″ × 10″ canvas. This may seem very specific, but standardizing the piece size allows our community jury to to judge a piece off quality, not quantity. Please label the back with student name, age, school (if submitted via a school or youth program), title of work, and contact phone/email. Please make sure that any labeling is not directly on the front of the canvas.

  • Submissions: Feb 3–13 — drop off at Meditating Monkey during business hours. If you need a scheduled drop-off time for a group, reply and we’ll arrange it.

  • Voting: Feb 13–27 — public voting will take place online (our Facebook page) and in-person at the Emporium. All submissions will appear in their own gallery album for review.

  • Reception & Winners: Feb 28, 6:00–8:00 PM — public reception celebrating participants; winner becomes our Spotlight Artist for the following month.

  • Prizes: Prize packs include local gift certificates and partner prizes, plus art-supply bundles and recognition in the gallery. Be our Spotlight Artist for a month!

How You Can Help

  1. Share this with students and families via classroom communication.

  2. Post the flyer in your front office or hallway. We can provide printed copies on request.

  3. Post the digital flyer!

  4. Schedule a short visit (5–10 min) to introduce the contest and show examples — reply with preferred dates/times to the listed contact information in this e-mail.

  5. Coordinate a group drop-off/pick-up — we’ll reserve a time slot so you can hand over multiple submissions at once. Please have the attached form filled out for each submission and returned (digitally or in print).

Accessibility & Permissions

  • We will ask parents/guardians to sign a simple release for display and online voting (the form attached to this post).

  • If you need printed flyers or alt-texted digital copies formatted for classroom newsletters or online platforms, say the word, and we’ll send them.
