Although our Governor and the legislature have made it possible to extend SNAP (food stamp) benefits to New Mexicans for the next 10 days, there is still a tremendous need to support the work of the Raton Hunger Pantry. The Raton Hunger Pantry provides far more than just food. It seeks to be the central hub for all community benevolence. We need a single location where those in need can come for financial assistance, food, and daily necessities, including diapers and other essentials. The Raton Hunger Pantry needs financial donations and contributions of nonperishable food items (e.g., food in boxes and cans, drinks in bottles that do not require refrigeration) as well as other essential supplies.
The Raton Coalition for the Unhoused has thus far been unsuccessful in finding a place to establish a warming station to help shelter those experiencing freezing weather, which we can expect to continue as winter approaches. While most of the local nomads who do not want to change their lifestyle have migrated to warmer climates in the southern part of our state, we still have unhoused individuals and families in need of community support right here in Raton. Recent posts on the Raton Community Facebook page have talked about the importance of our community taking action to help those in need. Your financial support and other contributions to the Raton Hunger Pantry are a great way to help our community respond to those in need and the challenges they face.
