NM Outdoor Recreation Division Award to City of Raton

The New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division (ORD) of the Department of Economic Development is pleased to announce the allocation of $2,178,029 through its Outdoor Equity Fund to 61 innovative programs across the state. These programs aim to provide outdoor education and career training to more than 22,000 youth, with a special focus on serving low-income families and Tribal communities.

The first round of funding for FY26 saw a record-breaking 140 applications requesting a total of $4.9 million, demonstrating the strong demand for outdoor recreation and educational opportunities in New Mexico. The grants support a wide range of local initiatives, including those by the City of Raton Recreation Department, which received $39,700 to enhance its outdoor programs for community youth. “This record funding round reflects our commitment to ensuring all New Mexico youth have access to the benefits of outdoor recreation and education,” said Karina Armijo, ORD Director. We are proud to support programs that promote health, environmental stewardship, and career pathways, especially for underserved communities.”

The Raton Outdoor Equity Program will relaunch outdoor recreation programs for youth, providing free access to outdoor recreation and activities for over 200 underserved youth and families in northeastern New Mexico. Through a new outdoor equipment lending program and seasonal youth-oriented recreational programming that includes biking, kayaking, disc golf, geocaching, and guided nature hikes, the program aims to reduce financial and geographic barriers to outdoor recreational participation. By fostering physical activity, environmental awareness, and community connection, this initiative will help revitalize outdoor culture in Raton.
