Colfax County Welcomes Newly Elected Officials as They Take Oath of Office
December 23, 2024
On December 23, 2024, Colfax County welcomed its newly elected officials, who took their oath of office in a ceremony, officiated by Eight Judicial Judge Steven Romero. The beginning of their four-year terms of service has marked a new chapter for the county, as these leaders step into roles of responsibility, poised to make decisions that will impact the community for years to come. These roles will become effective January 1, 2025.
The oath of office was attended by family members, friends, local dignitaries, and constituents. With their right hands raised, each official swore to “support the Constitution of the United States, and the laws of the State of New Mexico,” reaffirming their commitment to uphold the principles of democracy, public service, and the rule of law.
**A New Era of Leadership**
Among the new role in the office is Alfonso Ortiz, who was sworn in as Colfax County Treasurer. Ortiz, who served as Chief Deputy Treasurer under Lydia Garcia for the past four years and eight additional years as a deputy clerk, brings a wealth of experience to his new role.
Lydia Garcia, whose 35 years of dedicated service to Colfax County will be retiring on December 31, 2024. Lydia Garcia served three terms as Treasurer during this time. She will be missed for service and the contributions she made to the county’s financial well-being. Her leadership in the Treasurer’s office has left a lasting impact on Colfax County, and her retirement is met with deep gratitude from both her colleagues and the community. Garcia has been invaluable, with her roles. Alfonso Ortiz will continue her work and serve the people of Colfax County with the same passion and commitment.
Another key transition took place in the Colfax County Clerk’s office, where Sara Torres was sworn in as the new County Clerk. Torres, who has served as Chief Deputy Clerk under Rayetta Trujillo for the past 8 years, will take over the duties. Rayetta Trujillo, who has served two consecutive four-year terms will work as Sara’s Chief Deputy Clerk.
As Sara Torres takes over the role of County Clerk, the office will continue to benefit from the foundation that Rayetta built, one based on dedication, service, and an unyielding commitment to the people of Colfax County. Rayetta Trujillo has been an outstanding leader in the Clerk’s office. Her expertise and experience have had huge success in carrying out the roles of Colfax County and the Secretary of State Office. With her continued presence in the office, her commitment to Colfax County will continue.
Torres will ensure that her office will continue to serve our community with efficiency, transparency, and respect. The Clerk’s office has long been a pillar of county governance, and Torres’s experience makes her well-prepared to tackle the challenges and responsibilities of the position.
Special thanks to Lydia Garcia for her 35 years of service, and Rayetta Trujillo for her tenure as County Clerk. Both women have made significant contributions to Colfax County, and their legacy will be felt for many years to come.
**New Leadership in the County Commission**
In addition to changes in the Treasurer’s and Clerk’s offices, Colfax County also saw a shift in its Commission with the election of Todd Tatum. Tatum will replace outgoing Commissioner Brett Wier, who served a four-year term in District 3.
Todd Tatum will take on the leadership for District 3 and Colfax County. Todd Tatum will be ready to face the challenges ahead. Whether it’s managing county finances, or making critical decisions at the county commission level, he is committed to serving the public with integrity and diligence.
Special thanks to Brett Wier for his service and leadership. During his four-year term, Brett Wier played a vital role in the county. He held the position as chairman for the commission for two years. In his tenure he helped with the most recent development of bringing the Colfax County Angel Fire Airport (KAXX) and Advanced Air with air services from Angel Fire to Albuquerque. He has also tackled the challenging finances within the County. As well as numerous county improvements within the Roads Department and County Offices, along with countless other projects within the county.
**A Time of Transition**
As the newly elected officials take the reins, they are determined to build upon the work of their predecessors, ensuring that Colfax County continues to thrive. The oath they took was not only a formal promise but also a commitment to work tirelessly on behalf of their constituents.
With a fresh slate and a clear vision, Colfax County’s new leadership is ready to face the challenges ahead. Whether it’s managing county finances, ensuring smooth elections, or making critical decisions at the county commission level, these officials are committed to serving the public ethically and with accountability. As Colfax County moves forward into this new era, the public can expect strong leadership, continued dedication to public service, and a shared commitment to Colfax County.

Regarding the Recent Snowstorm.
Over the weekend Colfax County along with every other county in New Mexico and across our northern border in Eastern Colorado faced a significant snowstorm. In New Mexico, all 33 counties were affected by the storm with 29 counties reporting moderate to severe conditions. Colfax County Emergency Management, Road and Bridge, Sheriff’s Office, Fire Marshal and Firefighters worked long days to rescue stranded motorist, stranded homeowners, and worked together to plow snow so emergency services could get to residences to assist people needing help. Its important to note there was not anywhere in Colfax County that was not affected by the storm. Colfax County employees worked tirelessly to reach all affected areas; however, our primary focus was on life safety and opening main routes before we could focus on outlying areas. We appreciate our citizens patients and know that while we are proud of our efforts we will continue to look for ways to perform and communicate even better in the future. Snow amounts in Colfax County ranged between one to three feet and in some areas four feet with snow drifts reported as high as six feet. As of today 98%, of the county is open with a few outer lying areas still needing to be opened. Colfax County Manager, Monte Gore worked with IT Director, Amadeo Soto to arrange for a remote Emergency Meeting to be held so the County Commissioners could sign an emergency declaration to help cover the costs.
