Message From Superintendent Medina

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are writing to provide an update following yesterday’s threat at Raton Public Schools. After a thorough investigation by all law enforcement entities, it has been determined there is no ongoing threat to our school community. Yesterday, after a thorough search, there were no weapons found at Raton High School’s campus. The school environment is safe, and we are ready to welcome students back to class starting Thursday September 19, 2024. The Raton High School staff has taken great precautions and care to debrief and plan for your children’s return.

We understand the events of yesterday were deeply unsettling for students, staff, and families. As a result, we have arranged for counselors to be on-site to provide emotional support to any student, parent, or staff member who may need it. We encourage students to speak with counselors if they are feeling anxious or overwhelmed.

While the school is now safe, the investigation into the threat is still ongoing. Law enforcement continues to work diligently to determine the origin of the threat. We are cooperating fully with the authorities and will share any significant updates with you as soon as they become available.

Please know the safety of our students remains our top priority. We will continue to follow our enhanced safety protocols and maintain a heightened level of security on campus in the coming days to ensure everyone feels safe and supported as we return to normal school activities. At this time we are requiring all students to use clear bags, purses, or backpacks while on campus. We realize this will take time to accommodate, however, going forward, this is mandatory.

We will conduct a parent meeting on Monday September 23rd, 2024 at 5:30pm in the Raton High School Gym. Prior to the meeting, we will send out a question form. Please add your questions to the form, so they can be addressed Monday night. No additional questions will be taken during this meeting.

We thank you for your patience, understanding, and trust during this time. If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact the school administration.

Sincerely,

Kristie L. Medina
