letter to the editor

February 15th 2024 – Recently, at a county commission meeting, I witnessed a resident verbally attack a county employee with lies.  His reputation in this county is that he routinely threatens residents with violence, stalking and verbal abuse.  Three years ago he threatened me online with a graphic description of what he would do to me and that he knew where I lived.  I looked at his social media page and came to the conclusion that he owned many weapons.  I was concerned enough that I
took what he had written to me to the city police and attempted to make a report.  The officer actually laughed at me saying that he threatens everyone and that he, himself, had been threatened.

After the  county commission meeting on January 23,  I spoke to Sheriff Baca about my concerns (after hearing Rael’s rant directed at County Manager Monte Gore) Sheriff Baca  repeated that Rael threatens everyone.  I said, ‘He has an arsenal’ and Sheriff Baca interrupted me to say that he also had an arsenal.  I was made to feel like a silly alarmist and once again was dismissed by law enforcement.

After the last county commission meeting on the 13th I learned that even more people that I know have been threatened by this person. This man is the perfect candidate to be dealt with by Red Flag laws. Clearly he is deranged and has a long history of this kind of behavior.  Why is this man allowed to continue to disturb the peace and well being of so many people?  Are local authorities so afraid of the NRA and local gun rights people?

Violence is almost always preceded by threats. This man is clearly mentally unstable and has the capacity to imagine and act.   Maybe when someone gets killed or hurt, law enforcement will no longer be laughing. I demand action from local law enforcement and the District Attorney. This man should be evaluated for mental illness and his weapons should be confiscated.
Name withheld because of a healthy and real fear of this person.
